Medical Oncology is a vitally important aspect of the comprehensive cancer program at Indian River Medical Center. Our medical oncologists focus on diagnosing cancer, developing a treatment plan and coordinating overall care for the patient. They use chemotherapy or other medications to target the disease. This portion of the cancer program is part of a multi-disciplinary service that includes surgeons, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists and other medical professionals involved depending on the organ(s) affected. Together they will focus on developing the most effective course of treatment, inform the patient of the possible side effects and monitor progress and pain management. If at any point the patient is not tolerating the treatment well, the medical oncologist will modify the treatment plan or recommend using a different therapy to better fit that patient’s individual needs.
Oncologists specialize in managing drug treatments for people with early and advanced cancers that affect the organs, muscles, bones and connective tissue. However, people with some early stage cancers may be treated with surgery or radiation therapy alone and may not need the care of an oncologist.
Oncologists at Indian River Medical Center, Vero Beach have extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of a full range of types of cancer. Treatments managed by oncologists include:
